September 22 Three lake trout, two from in the bay and one from outside. Still windy. Surface temperature dropped to 57 degrees. Larger trout was full of spawn. One more trip planned for this year and then the Kala Moiakka will be put away for the winter.

September 21 Two lake trout on Saturday from Bete Greis Bay. Fish were in 90 feet of water and right on the bottom. Tried for some salmon but just one fish on. He got off before we could identify it. Felt like a trout anyway. Windy, surface temp was 59 degrees.

July 19 Bete Greise Bay - fished same spot 40 feet down in 50 feet of water, right on the drop off. Caugt 2 trout , one coho and lost four in 1 1/2 hours. Fast fishing but hard because of a 3 foot sea. Yellow spoon was working well again.

July 18 Bete Greis Bay - fished in 40 to 60 feet of water, down 40 feet. Caught 3trout and one King. Fish running about 2 to 4 pounds. King was 8 pounds. Dodger and fly or a yellow flutter spoon seem to work well.

May 26 Too windy for Lake Superior. Fished the channel and caught three fish. At least that is what the crew called them. I look the puky green things up in a book and it said that they were small mouth bass. Hope they didn't contaminate the Kala Moiakka. May have to disinfect the boat.

May 25 Windy. Got one Brown and lost 2 more fish in 15 feet of water off the channel at Bete Greis. Tide came in and the brown water disappeared. Water temp went from 48 degrees to 37. Fish quit. Moved to deep water and picked up two more lake trout. More big fish 8 to 10 pounds.

May 24 Foggy and calm. Got 5 trout somewhere out in the lake in 200 feet of water. Never saw the shore. Rescued a little bird that landed on the boat. Whitefish Wille caught him with the net and he had a ride back to shore in the cabin of the boat. Willie caught 2 minominee's and 1 splake from Copper Harbor in the afternoon.

May 18 Three fish off of the mouth of the Montreal River. Fish caught in 186 feet of water. Many schools of bait fish but not many trout around yet. Hope it improves.

May 17 Six lake trout from the bottom out in 196 to 205 feet. All nice red fish. Six pounds to 12 pounds. Lots of lamprey scars on the fish. Fished off of Traverse

Monday, 5/5/97 we fished a stream mouth in Houghton County and got 33 Minominee White fish. Looks like the suckers are in spawning and the white fish are in. Used garden worm drifted out into the current.

We fished Saturday, 5/3/97, night for smelt in Keweenaw and got 20. They ran Friday night but looked like the run was over by Saturday. Sunday we fished Copper Harbor for Splake. Windy, was hard to control boat. We caught one Splake. 2/3/97: La'Anse Bay. Starting out to be a good year for Lake Trout. Trout seem to be holding in 180 to 200 feet of water. Ice is only about 8 inches thick out to the Mission. It is not safe out past the place where the ice went out last week. Many people are catching limits.

1/17/97 HURON BAY Caught 6 white fish and 8 smelt. Fished 60 feet of water using spawn and Swedish pimples. Ice is about 16 inches thick and runs out to past Whitts Marina. Some large Lawyers were also caught.
La'Anse Ice right by La'Anse is all jumbled up and broken. It seems to go almost out to Pequaming. Fishermen are getting out to the Lake Trout grounds. Most are going on the ice from near the water plant. Didn't talk to any so don't know how good they did.

July 16 : 3 lake trout and one coho. Fished a little deeper and found some smaller trout 2 to 4 pounds. Fish were near the bottom in 130 feet of water. There are large schools of herring out in the lake. Fish are feeding on the herring and not smelt. Never marked so many schools of suspended baitfish. Salmon are still scarce. Have to realy work to find them. A little early for them to be in though.

July 15 : 3 Lake Trout and lost 6 in 2 hours out from Bete Greis Bay. 90 feet of water and fishing near the bottom. Dodgers and flies, cow bells and peanuts were the hot rigs. Fish were running large 6 to 10 pounds so had to search to find small ones to keep. (Large lake trout are not worth keeping) You have to fish outside of the bay as the bay is ringed with pond nets and there are no fish in the bay. Tried in the bay twice and never got a bite.

Memorial Day Weekend: Fished out of Bete Greis Bay, Keweenaw County. Lake was so calm that the biggest waves on the lake were caused by the seaguls. Bobbed at 175 feet of water. White jigs from 1/4 oz to 1 oz. Cuaght about seven fish each morning.
Tried trolling the surface near shore for salmon but they are not in yet. Had one king on but he got off right at the boat.
Still some snow on the ground in Keweenaw. Beer kept cold all weekend in the snow drift by the front door. Had night ice on the lake one morning.

Tue, 21 May 1996 : Went to Keweenaw Bay last Saturday with Whitefish Willie. Fished from his boat the Geppo, We fished off of Portage Entry for the first part of the day. No hits and lots of junk on the water, even a 40 foot tree.
Moved to Baraga and fished there. Had to fish around the ice but it didn't last long in the big wind. It is gone now. We had one hit and caught one coho jack. There were three other boats out on the bay. One got three fish, the other two got skunked.

BARAGA 3/17/96
Went out on Keweenaw Bay off De Roshers Road. Went out to a reef aobut 5 miles out. Ice is still good but showing some signs of softening. Will have to watch it carefully if the weather warms up. Fished in 210 feet of water. We caught two lake trout. Largest was 4 pounds and smallest was 14 inches. Fish were not hitting very well and catches were spotty.

Sunday 3/11/96
Five Lake Trout, Size ran from 14 inches to 25 inches. Fish were caught six inches off the botom in 190 feet of water. Best acess to the ice is De Rochers road North of Baraga. Best fishing seems to be about 4 to 5 miles out. Ice is good, 18 inches thick. Travel is a little tough as there is about 4 to 6 inches of snow on it in places. Snowmobiles have no problem but four wheelers have a hard time. Fish were hitting on jig and cut bait. Fished in the Bay for Coho's but no luck.

Fish report from Sunday: 2/18/96 Lake Superior, Keweenaw Bay Five lake trout caught in 180 feet of water about 2 inches off bottom. Lure was a 3/8 oz jig with cut perch as bait. Quite a few other bites, good number of fish around. Size was small, fish ran from 14 inches to 18 inches. Good eaters.

Keweenaw Bay, Baraga: One coho, 20 feet down in 80 feet of water near the drop off. Lure, silver sweedish pimple, no bait. Fish from 4:30 to dark as they are not around in the middle of the day. Early morning can be good too but be out before the sun hits the water. Lots of smelt are being taken after dark in 30 to 40 feet of water.
Had a report of a group of ten guys getting their limit of trout, some up to 5 pounds, from 240 feet of water off of Pequaming. They were fishing about 4 miles out. They got both pink trout and some fats.

Subject: Ice and coho Date: Sat, 17 Feb 1996 From: Bob Meyers To: yooper@star.net Heading up to La'anse tomorrow for coho, trout and smelt. White Fish Willie got a bunch of smelt off the Falls last Sunday. Ice is good out past Jacobsville. Or at least it was. I fish out of Lac La Belle (Keeweenaw) in the summer. Both trout and coho. Have been doing a lot of specializing on salmon in the last couple of years. More around then you think.
