The "Camps U.P. North is a brief history of the hunting camps of Northern Marquette County in Michigan's Upper Peninsula. Most were constructed between 1880 and 1910, a testament to our immigrant fathers who came to Michigan to work the iron mines and find a better way of life. With them came their love of nature and the desire to have a place of their own in the woods. This is their story, including approximately 100 photos with stories about the old camps and people who frequented them. The book costs $10.00 +$3.00 Shipping and Handling. 3/11/96: While last weekend's Splake Invasion tapered off somewhat by most reports, this lucky fisherman managed to take another limit Saturday afternoon. Although small, the tasty little devils were taken in 30ft of water, on a line from the lighthouse to the steamplant smokestack, about halfway out. Starting about 2:30pm, an hour passed before the first one hit, then after another hour, a small school came thru, providing the final tally.
3/4/96: Splake invasion at Marquette Lower Harbor!
Ice Fishing in the Lower Harbor is underway. Yesterday, this Yooper and a friend went out in front of the steam plant and caught limits of Splake and a 15" coho. We watched several other successful anglers walk off the ice with limits of splake ranging from 11 to 19 inches. The ice was 8" thick where we fished, about 1/4 mile from shore in about 25' of water. We fished from 11am to 3pm, but heard that the splake have been hitting well at all hours, taking minnows on a bobber or sweedish pimple jigged on the bottom.
Last nights Video Golf Association meeting continued the leaderboard onslaught of recent weeks, while Johnny Norman claimed clear queeter-leader status on Doral's 9th hole, after 3 waterballs from the tee followed by a near flipper-dip.A second round was forgone in lieu of a trip to The Village Pub to hear Bobby Hayes and the Youngbloods. An exceptional evening featured sone of Bobbys friends sitting in on harmonica and guitar. A breathtaking rendition of Voodoo Child left fans dazed but not confused about who's the King of Rockin' Blues in this part of the world. He will be back at The Pub on March 8th with Radio Active.

The annual Snowball Open at Bob Cowell's Big Bay Estate was a big success again this year. Hardy golfers endured a -20 degree windchill to compete for the coveted t-shirt which was won by Earl Hawn in the Feb 4th event.
2/26/96: Stiff competition rules as Leaderboards continue to crumble!
Steve Pate shot a 61 to take the top leaderboard position on Crystal Lake in Sunday's VGA match as all four players placed on that leaderboard, marking yet another historic event in Video Golf Association history. An informal discussion followed the matches regarding the queeter cache disposition for the Player's Championship Party in March.
Gary Player established a stunning VGA landmark by shooting a second consecutive sub-60 round on Banf Springs at the Thursday night Video Golf Association match. The second round, on the rugged Bug Tussle Downs, saw not only the usual multitude of waterballs, but an unusual triple chilidip by a shaken Johnny Norman, while Steve Pate shot a most excellent 61 round to place third on the leaderboard.
2/18/96: Leaderboards crumble in Historic Video Golf Association match!
In the second of Sunday's VGA matches on Royal St. George, Steve Pate and Gary Player both logged sub sixty scores to claim the two top leaderboard positions and make club history with two players shooting below 60 in the same game. Player shot a 57 (-13), and Pate a 59. This was Player's third showing in the 50's club this season, breaking out of a 3 week slump and taking 9 skins on both courses played, with Pate also taking 9 skins on both courses and leaving Earl Crenshaw with 36 skinless holes.Sawgrass, the first course played, was dominated by Pate with a -11 to take top honors on that leaderboard. Earl Crenshaw also placed 10th on this leaderboard before suffering tubulational difficulties on Royal St. George in the second game.
The U.P. 200 sled dog races got off in grand style last night at 8 p.m. amidst thousands of cheering yoopers, clad warmly in big hairy hats, puffy insulated snowsuits and oversized knee-high muckluks. An estimated 9,000 gallons of beer was consumed at the Portside Inn where the race began in perfect weather and conditions. Photos to appear at a later date.
Last night's meeting of the Video Golf Association produded some leaderboard changes, as both Crenshaw and Player took positions on Glenmoor and Firestone. Player is still deep in an incredible skin slump, although he managed a par 4 eagle on Firestone, dropping in a 5 Wood minimum shot from 107 yards. When informed of this incredible feat, the Buckmeister only replied, "I want Shorty Boy over here, and give me a bone."
The Annual Big Bay Fishing Derby was held on Feb 10 & 11 on lake Independence. Pouring rain followed by a howling blizzard, and too much beer hampered efforts to provide more than minimal observations of this event; however, some photographs were taken and will appear here by the end of this month. Of particular note is a 27lb, 44 inch Northern Pike caught Saturday morning. A number of other Pike over 12 lbs were also taken, but perch and walleye fishing in general was lousy.
Overheard at the Lumberjack during the Big Bay Ice Fishing Derby:
"Gee, two weeks ago today, it was 38 below zero in my front yard, today its raining and +40....., beer please...."
